It is amazing how one moment can significantly change your life.
This afternoon my mom, dad, and I sat in an examining room at a medical office as the doctor told us he was 99% sure that my mom has leukemia.
My mom hasn't been feeling well for the last couple of months. She been lacking energy and fighting a cold. We thought it was the weather, regular old colds and flus... didn't think much of it.
Her blood tests have been showing low hemoglobin levels. Since they were so low, they sent her to the hematologist. Based on the blood tests they have, her symptoms, and a bone marrow test they did on site... he's pretty sure it's leukemia.
After running home to grab some clothes and stuff for my mom and some Chic-Fil-A for lunch, we left to admit her to St. Mary Hospital.
They set her up with an IV and did a blood transfusion to get her hemaglobin levels up. We will probably be here through the weekend for her to be observed and tested.
The doctor is working through the process of getting her a bed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). HUP has teams of doctors who specialize in leukemia and they treat patients for this continually. Until there's a bed ready for her there, we'll be waiting things out here at St. Mary.
