Thank you all so much for your words of encouragement and prayers for my mom and family. I have been letting my parents know about your prayers and sharing your words of encouragement. It means so very much to us all! God’s peace and comfort is present… thank you, Lord!
I apologize for not being able to respond to you all individually and not having sent an update sooner. My father and I have been spending pretty much all day but for sleeping hours in the hospital with my mom. It has made for some long days, but I’m soo thankful that we can be with her during this time of waiting.
My mom spent Friday through Monday at our local hospital, St. Mary, where they did a blood transfusion to improve her hemoglobin levels. Her levels went from a 6.8 to a 10.1. This was a great improvement and she felt more energy as a result.
Last night, Monday, she was transferred from our local hospital to a major hospital in Philadelphia - HUP (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania). The hematologist who provided her initial diagnosis spoke highly of this hospital (as have friends who have also received care here). We are thankful that we will be able to have the care and treatment through the teams of doctors there who specialize in leukemia.
The team of doctors at HUP are STILL reviewing all of the tests and records to confirm diagnosis for themselves. It is pretty certain that they will confirm positively that she has Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). It is probable that she will spend about month as a patient here at HUP for the first round of treatment. This will include about 7 days of chemotherapy followed by in hospital recovery time.
We expect to be able to meet with the team of doctors tomorrow to receive final confirmation from them on her diagnosis, as well as discuss the treatment plan.
Tomorrow they will also be doing a simple procedure to insert a “Hickman line.”
This is a catheter that is placed for long term use for the chemotherapy and also for drawing blood.
Thanks again for your prayers! Those who have sent verses and words of encouragement I plan on writing them out for my mom and hanging them in her room to encourage her during this time – so thank you for sharing these words of truth, hope and comfort!!
This will likely be a long road ahead of us. A long road, but our Father will be before and beside us all along the way. In that I take great hope and comfort. As grateful as I am that we are in a great facility, with qualified doctors – I acknowledge the fact that it is our Creator who is the Great Physician. So, I am grateful to know that He is in control and He is GOOD in every way.
